SUMMARY:May Regenerate Whatcom / Permaculture Meet-up! Birchwood Bike Tour!
DESCRIPTION:The May Whatcom Permaculture Meet-up\, in partnership with Regenerate Whatcom\, will be a special treat indeed! The event will include a bicycle tour of various properties in the neighborhood that practice permaculture\, regenerative agriculture\, and good ole fashion gardening! \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to invite you to the upcoming Birchwood Permaculture Bike Tour and Potluck on Saturday\, May 30th\, from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM.Organized in collaboration with Whatcom Permaculture and Regenerate Whatcom\, this neighborhood event features a rolling tour of local permaculture properties. Seven host stops are confirmed\, offering real-world examples of intentional land use\, ecological design\, and food production. \n\n\n\nHow to RSVP \n\n\n\nIf you plan to attend\, please send an email directly to Julian and David to help us estimate headcount for the potluck. \n\n\n\nPlease ensure your reply includes both organizers: \n\n\n\n* Julian Kapoor: procnias@gmail.com* David MacLeod: miles58@yahoo.com \n\n\n\n\nEvent Logistics & Parking \n\n\n\n* When: Saturday\, May 30th\, from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM.Please arrive at 2:30 PM to get situated; the tour will start promptly at 3:00 PM.* Where: Starts and terminates at 3116 Pinewood Avenue.* Parking: Because street parking is not permitted in the immediate neighborhood\, please park your vehicles at the nearby Birchwood Elementary School parking lot and walk or bike over to the starting point.* The Route: Participants will travel by bicycle between properties within the neighborhood.* The Stops: Each location will host a mini-meetup or short tour focusing on distinct themes\, possibly including hemp building\, hügelkultur\, swales\, and biochar.* The Potluck: Our starting location serves as the central hub. You can drop off potluck dishes here before the ride begins. We will return to this site at the end of the tour to eat and socialize. If you’d like to participate just in the potluck\, expect it to start circa 5:00pm. \n\n\n\nNote: A follow-up email will be sent prior to the event detailing the finalized bike route\, specific stop locations\, exact times\, and the full schedule of discussion topics. \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Your Hosts & The Neighborhood History \n\n\n\nThe tour originates and concludes at the home of Julian Kapoor\, Julie Miller\, and their family.Julian and Julie are California natives and former evolutionary ecology researchers who relocated to Bellingham in 2022 to focus on climate change mitigation\, public health\, and to find more intentional community. They chose Birchwood specifically for its unique urban agricultural history. \n\n\n\nIn the early 20th century\, much of the Birchwood neighborhood was intentionally platted into long\, deep lots to allow working-class families to sustain themselves with backyard orchards\, gardens\, and livestock. This design left a legacy of deep backyards and mature fruit trees that makes the area highly suited for modern permaculture integration. \n\n\n\nWhile managing a 6-year-old and a 1-year-old has kept Julian and Julie’s large-scale property adjustments on a gradual timeline\, their 0.3-acre site features several active polyculture experiments. It provides a realistic look at the early\, foundational stages of planning a food forest. Julian’s recent focus on producing and utilizing biochar will serve as the demonstration theme for this stop. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare It!\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Fall Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Fall is the best time to plant perennials! We are having plant sale in preparation to put our Nursery beds to sleep for the winter. \n\n\n\n\n\nHere we are at Fall…. oh so fast\, Summer has passed! Where did the time go? This season has been so abundant we could hardly keep up with the harvesting of all the fruit that is coming on in our systems. \n\n\n\nFirst were Cherries\, honey berries\, goumi berry\, then plumbs\, raspberries\, Shipova and Asian pear. Then the finger was out of the dike all the other fruit came ripe\, apples\, grapes\, mulberries\, walnuts\, filberts\, chestnuts and more. We could hardly keep up with the harvesting from our trees. OMG how good! Along with many new apple and pear varieties. Not to mention our annual crops and garlic all did well. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere is a list of some of the plants that are available at Inspiration Farm! They are not all listed online\, but can be found in the nursery. \n\n\n\nSo…. Get ready\, Get set\, PLANT! The rain is here! In the spirit of fall planting we are having our Permaculture nursery plant sale in hopes that you will find something to add to your perennial food security system.\n\n\n\nFor this Sale I will donate 10% of sales from $100-$500 to Regenerate Whatcom If you get greater than $500 worth of plants I will donate 20% to Regenerate Whatcom Read more about Regen Whatcom Here\n\n\n\n\n\nHere in the Pacific Northwest fall is the best time for planting. There are a lot of good reasons to plant now. The soil is still warm so roots will still grow giving you a much larger plant next spring. The soil doesn’t get too cold until about late November. The fall rains have started so you don’t have to water or worry about your new plants getting dried out. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a small Nursery we really don’t want to over winter lots of plants. At this time of year many of the plants are looking a little tired so less appealing. So why not pass on a few good bargains to your loyal customers? Plants have been in a container all year so have a well developed root system. Once in the ground\, just wait until spring and have a beautiful specimen in your own garden. Another reason for fall planting to to add fall interest into your gardening routine.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI like to plant trees and shrubs in the Fall for the most part because it gives the plant all winter to set roots while the top is dormant. During the winter there is lots of water and not a lot of sun so the plants put their energy into setting up a good root system so they head into Summer well established. The second best time to plant perennials is early in the Spring but it gives the plant less time to set roots. With some plants I do prefer to plant in the Spring is if the plant is frost sensitive like a fig\, citrus or elderberry. These plants like to have a well established root system before the go through a good freeze. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen planting make sure you leave room for the plant to grow. Add a little compost mulch on top and a stake if needed. I wouldn’t recommend fertilizer in the hole because you don’t want to encourage the plant to start to grow when it should be going dormant.  Enjoy the Fall season\, get out and put some plants in the ground. \n\n\n\nWe want to share high density food nutrition abundance with everyone so we have put a lot of energy into our nursery plant propagation and it did well this year. We are well stocked in productive permaculture plants to help get your system kick started with berries\, fruit and nut trees\, vines\, nitrogen fixers and more! What do you need in your system? \n\n\n\nWe are here to help you with seeds\, plants and whole systems design advice. Let us know how we can help and let’s talk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare It!\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:June Permaculture Meet up and Regenerate Whatcom Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Hello\, my name is Jeanette\, and I have a suburban food forest style garden in the Ridgemont neighborhood in Bellingham. I run a small scale nursery and craft my own herbal salves\, teas\, and tinctures. I also offer regular themed garden tours\, such as perennial vegetables\, pollinator plants\, or my top 15 favorite plants in my garden. \n\n\n\nI have a special interest in unusual perennial vegetables\, and am always experimenting in that regard. I love to grow berries\, mulch crops\, plants for pollinators\, medicinal herbs\, nuts\, native plants\, and as much fruit as I can. I started my garden in early 2016 and it’s only gotten bigger and more fun since! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI’d love for you to come visit and tour my garden\, I love answering questions and having conversations about awesome plants! I will have herbal tea and snacks available\, and plants and herbal goods for purchase if anyone is interested.  \n\n\n\nI also have an extensive library about permaculture\, ethnobotany\, and other related topics\, and I am more than happy to talk about book recommendations as well.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI am in an easily accessible neighborhood on the south side of Bellingham. Street parking is available on the street in front and near my house. \n\n\n\nAddress: 3606 Taylor Ave.\, near I-5 exit 252. \n\n\n\n3 – 6 pm \n\n\n\nPlease\, no dogs. SUMMARY:Permaculture Meet-up at Queen Mountain Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Interests at your site: gardens\, orchards\, silvoculture\, peri-urban homesteading\, water management\, community\, chickens \n\n\n\nSite description: Queen Mountain Homestead (QHM) is an 8-acre intergenerational family home and educational demonstration site nestled on the western flank of Bellingham’s Queen Mountain.  In the spring of 2016\, after a decade+ of designing\, building and maintaining permaculture landscapes across Washington (and internationally)\, we became the designer-stewards of our forever home. \n\n\n\nOver the last 8 years\, we have practiced phased implementation of abundant gardens and orchards; operated a silviculture system with American Guinea Hogs and a large flock of chickens; managed beautiful native forests dealing with climate change; and grown and expanded a strong human community of family and friends.   \n\n\n\nWith a background in urban landscaping and gardening\, our site offers not only tangible examples for small scale rural homesteading\, but also showcases techniques appropriate for urban and suburban backyards. \n\n\n\nSite tour from 4pm-5:30pm; Potluck from 5:30-7pm \n\n\n\n\nRegistrations are closed for this event \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about Whatcom PC Meet-Ups Here. Host one at your place. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare It!\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Free Pruning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 29th\, from 9-2:30pm\, for a unique opportunity to learn fruit tree pruning from Jane Campbell while contributing to Whatcom County food security.\n\n\n\nThe workshop will take place at the CTK Food Share and Farm orchard. This small\, privately owned orchard was donated to the CTK Food Share and Farm. All fruit produced on the trees goes to volunteers\, food banks and food pantries around Whatcom County.\n\n\n\nThe CTK Gleaning team is managing sign-ups here\n\n\n\n Timely pruning is essential for: reducing and controlling disease and pest pressure; sculpting strong branch structure; and\, increasing flower and fruit yields!\n\n\n\nJane is an experienced local landscaper and orchardist specializing in fruit tree training\, maintenance and restoration pruning.\n\n\n\nThis is a great opportunity to learn how to prune your own trees while helping restore this donated orchard. What to expect: We will spend ~1hr lightly reviewing pruning theory and vocabulary\, essential pruning tools and tool sharpening. Then we will dive into practicing techniques. This is our second year restoring this orchard.\n\n\n\nAll participants will be invited to return to the orchard in summer to learn summer thinning and pruning; and\, again in the fall to bring in the harvest.\n\n\n\nSign-up here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare It!\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:PC Meet-up\, March 2023
DESCRIPTION:A Free gathering time for People interested in Permaculture from Whatcom County to come together and discuss ideas. \n\n\n\nHere are some ideas for topics to discuss at this months gathering. \n\n\n\n\nWater\, \n\n\n\nSeed Saving \n\n\n\nPruning trees\n\n\n\nCommunity organizations. \n\n\n\nWhat is the plant of the month?\n\n\n\n\nThis months meet up will be hosted by… Julie and Julian \n\n\n\nWe invite the Whatcom Permaculture group to visit our home in the Birchwood neighborhood. We just moved onto this ⅓ acre property in July and are in the early stages of design and planning. In this gathering\, we would like to share our ideas and vision for how we want to transform the property\, but we are especially eager to get an outside perspective from others with more experience or those at a similar stage as we are. Ultimately\, we would like to convert what is mostly lawn into a food forest of mostly perennials (but also some annuals mixed in).  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurrently\, our main focus has been clearing out (and repurposing) the objects and plants that we don’t want and making as many observations as we can (about light\, drainage\, soil\, wildlife\, indicator species\, etc). What has your process been for transforming a property from scratch? What has your process been for getting to know your property? What have you been keeping track of and how? How have you dealt with removing established invasive\, like ivy and blackberry? \n\n\n\nIn line with “getting to know your property\,” we both have expertise in animal biology (especially birds and insects)\, and could also hold a skill share in biodiversity monitoring if people are interested. Over the long term\, we are interested in monitoring how biodiversity (i.e. the number of different species and their abundance) changes over the years as we build out the property. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent details:\n\n\n\nWhere: We’re located at 3116 Pinewood Ave. We have limited parking at our house\, but there’s abundant parking in the lot at Birchwood Elementary School\, just down the street. We’ll prepare something for folks to snack on and will have a share table set-up (for resources\, seeds\, snacks\, drinks\, etc.) \n\n\n\nWhen: Friday\, March 31st\, 2023 4-7 PM\n\n\n\nHope to see you there!\n\n\n\nJulie and Julian 408-316-3148\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t forget something for the sharing table: seeds\, plants\, books.\n\n\n\nJoin other folks interested in permaculture for an informal discussion. How can we move Permaculture forward here in Whatcom county. How can we as a community form guilds of different skill sets\, aid in promoting permaculture related events and work within our community to install permaculture systems such as food forests\, lending libraries\, speakers forums and cooperative nurseries. Come bring your idea to share! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare It!\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n Like this:Like Loading…

The project will encompass 5 acres. The long-term goal is to provide opportunities for the local community and visitors to reconnect with each other and nature while cultivating more harmonious and resilient relationships. \n\n\n\nLead Instruction by Brian Kerkvliet co-steward of Inspiration Farm and a 15 year Permaculture practitioner\, designer\, consultant. A Student of Geoff Lawton in design methodologies and earthworks for Permaculture projects. Brian has designed and installed numerous projects around the county. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHello\, & thanks for your interest in the 2022 “Designing a Water Retention Landscape” event.  My name is Hunter Wolf Lydon\, and I have been a student of Permaculture since 2013.  After taking 2 PDC courses\, a rainwater harvesting design workshop with Watershed Management Group in AZ\, and studying soil through the SoiI Food Web School\, I’ve realized the importance of soil and water.  I feel they are quite important for our survival\, which is why I want to host this class and help develop a site where all creatures can relax\, eat & enjoy themselves. I’ve been stewarding the site we’ll be working on for the past 2.5 years. Spending that time observing\, building soil\, and planting vegetation that need little attention.  It’s a 5 acre parcel that’s quite wet\, even standing water in some spots most of the year; however\, dry in areas\, for a portion of the summer.  The land is slightly sloped from both the East and West with a swale that splits the parcel in half.  Most of the soil is Whatcom Labounty clay\, with some silty loam as well.  It’s been a pasture for as long as the neighbors can recall\, with almost no trees or shrubs other than what I’ve planted.  It’s basically a blank canvas making it a great site to install earthworks that will direct and hold more water.  I had the privilege of attending last year’s earthworks course and it was fantastic.  Brian Kerkvliet most certainly knows how to teach this material and is\, in my opinion\, a master in the field.  This is a great opportunity to learn valuable land stewarding information as the environment around us gets increasingly challenging\, and water management becomes more important. Thanks & we hope to see you in August. Hunter \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen: August Sat 27th 9pm through Sunday 28th 5pm \n\n\n\nWhere:  Facilitated on location at the client’s property\, mid county off Smith Rd. \n\n\n\nCamping available\, Lunches will be pot luck. \n\n\n\nCost: $325 |  Register before July 1st for the Early bird discount $275 \n\n\n\nJoin Us\, Space is limited\, Payment due upon registration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Earthworks Workshop 2022 \n Early Bird\, till July 1st – 275 USDRegular Price – 325 USD\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nIf you would rather pay by check you can make it out to Inspiration farm and mail it to 617 E Laurel Rd.
